What are the implementation phases of EMAS?
To obtain EMAS registration, an organization must comply with the following requirements :
- carry out an environmental analysis of its activities
;
- equip themselves with an effective environmental management system to improve their environmental efficiency ;
- provide a statement regarding its environmental efficiency.
What happens if an organization already has ISO 14001 certification?
The Commission has taken note of the usefulness that the International Standard for environmental management systems (ie ISO 14001) can have for EMAS. Thanks to the integration of the ISO 14001 system in the EMAS structure, organizations can move from one system to another without needlessly repeating their efforts.
EMAS also requires organizations to make public, as part of the environmental declaration, information relating to environmental management policies, programs and systems and the organization's environmental efficiency..
- Environmental analysis describes the impact and efficiency of the organization's activities, products and services;
- Implementation, audit, verification of the environmental management system and validation of the environmental statement provide the means to improve the organization's environmental efficiency and ensure the credibility of the process.
- The environmental declaration is approved by an accredited verifier and registered with the competent body.
- At this point the organization has the right to use the EMAS logo .
