D- OHSAS 18001

In April 1999, the BSI, in response to those requesting a safety and health management system standard against which it can be evaluated and certified, publishes OHSAS 18001 "Specifications for health and safety management systems", developed with assistance and collaboration of various certification bodies.

OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) 18001 is a standard for the certification of the Safety and Health (or Industrial Hygiene) management system for the control of the risks of an Organization, it is international (considering the Entities that participated in its elaboration), but it is not a British Standard also if the BSI, which published it, retains ownership and copyright.

OHSAS 18001 :

  • is based on the BS 8800 standard,
  • is compatible with management system standards: ISO 14001 (Environment) and ISO 9001 (Quality)

It is expected that it will be updated, and that it will still be updated if new editions of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 are published to ensure compatibility.

The alignment of OHSAS 18001 to the standards Environment and Quality, allows the company that desires it, to be able to integrate more easily the three systems Security and Health, Environment and Quality.

The OHSAS 18001 system has essentially two purposes:

  • Make risk control efficient
  • Continuously improve performance

It does not give detailed specifications for the management system design, and does not oblige the company to comply with specific performance criteria.

The OHSAS management system is rather an organizational framework, which must be periodically monitored and reviewed so that it can provide an effective direction to an organization's activities by responding to internal and external factors.
